Fellowship Opportunity

Corewell Health Fellowship Final

The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at William Beaumont Hospital/Beaumont Health in Royal Oak, Michigan offers a 1-year fellowship in microvascular and craniofacial reconstruction. The goal of the fellowship is for the fellow to develop skills in both fields, bridging the gap using both disciplines to optimize patient outcomes.

The fellow performs microsurgical cases including perforator flap breast reconstruction, head & neck free flap reconstruction (congenital, traumatic, and oncologic), pediatric microsurgery, lymphedema reconstruction (LVA & supraclavicular VLNT), and extremity free flap reconstruction. A wide variety of flaps are represented in the experience including DIEA, TUG, ALT, radial forearm, fibula, medial sural artery perforator flap, medial femoral condyle flap and scapular/parascapular flaps. Fellows typically graduate having performed over 120 flaps.

The fellow runs the monthly Ian Jackson Craniofacial Clinic and has the opportunity to participate in the craniofacial clinic in Flint, Michigan for a more underserved experience. Each year, the fellow will perform 20-30 primary cleft lip and palate repairs, 30-40 secondary cleft lip and palate repairs/revisions including septorhinoplasty, and 20-30 intracranial procedures including total vault reconstruction, endoscopic suturectomy, and cranial distraction. Additional experience in complex rhinoplasty, Mohs reconstruction, and orthognathic surgery provide an exceptionally well-rounded experience.

The fellow has attending privileges and takes 4 weeks of facial trauma call distributed throughout the year. There are 4 weeks of elective time and travel funding to set up a rotation at another institution, either in the U.S. or abroad. Prior fellows have traveled to Toronto, Belgium, and Taiwan.

This training experience is within the practice of Dr. Kongkrit Chaiyasate and his associates. Dr. Chaiyasateโ€™s innovative approach to difficult plastic surgery problems have led the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery to award him with the 2014 โ€œBest Case of the Yearโ€ and 2017 & 2019 โ€œBest Save of the Yearโ€. Candidate selection is completed through the San Francisco Match Program under Microsurgery. For further information, please contact Dr. Chaiyasate directly at [email protected]
